Colony Collapse Disorder Update

I have added a new article in the Bee’s & Beekeeping section, under ‘Colony Collapse’.
Please take a moment to read up on this phenomenon as it is effecting global supplies of honey.

Please also take note of the price changes of many of my honey products due to the shortages of honey caused by colony collapse disorder. If you have any queries regarding this phenomenon and its effects here in South Africa, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Parasitic mites [such as this Varroa mite visible on this bee], pesticides,
poor nutrition, stress & the IAPV virus are all thought to be contributing
factors in Colony Collpase Disorder.

7 December 2008

Hello dear friend, client and fellow honey fiend.
After many requests, finally I did it.
For “it” I mean, to write about reasons for African bees’ innate defensiveness and how to prevent and survive subsequent attacks.
Basically, to understand their behaviour and to be “street wise” when having to deal with them.
It’s title? “African (Killer Bees) survival guide”, and you can find it in my November issue of my Newsletter
-The fear of the unknown is what scares people most.
I would be most fulfilled if somehow the information in the newsletter would empower people for them to comprehend reasons for (African) bees behaviour and ultimately feeling safer and happier in their presence.
Perhaps schools could be encouraged to pass on the relevant information from i.e.

-How to avoid being stung.

-What to do when a swarm attacks.

Ever since the dawn of man honeybees have been regarded as representing goodness, happiness, wealth, fulfilment in life, healthy living, the best medicine, and even the actual messengers of God(s). Not the terrible negative image that are portrayed now and then or simply believed.

Basically: -To understand is everything.
Would you believe that one of the very few things that may force a fully grown African bull elephant to run for dear life could be as simple as playing a tape with the sound of an enraged swarm of bees within his ear shot?
It is hard to imagine how in just a few seconds the biggest living land animal and rightly the epitome of an absolute wild force of Nature becomes like any other weakling.
The reason for that is because, unfortunately, they aren’t yet plugged in to the Net, so as to be able to read my newsletters.
Ag shame…! What a pity…!
Other articles in the November Newsletter are:

-Honey & Sinus

-Bees as “Security Guards”

-Karroo Honey

-Survival guide (mine) against unethical honey suppliers

-Bee Pollen high in anti-oxidants

-New products

11 January 2009

Hello dear friends, customers and fellow honey fiends.
Recently I came across four powerful human stories, and each one with a common factor, honey.
One is about tragedy mixed with uplifting fortitude. Another is of near disasters, last minute happy endings and deep and long lasting personal trauma.
The third one is most poignant and is evolving right now as I am writing.
The last one should be seen as (deadly) serious, and hopefully not as outwardly farcical as one stage it may seem.

New Honey(s) descriptions:

-Avocado

-Buffalo Thorn
